Some people grow up with loving parents who love them unconditionally. Others must suffer from abuse, which arises from the abuse of toxic substances or are motivated by frustration and lack of control. In my case, I think I’m in the middle. I was able to experience both realities during my childhood and adolescence, something that ended up defining my own personality, influencing the way I perceive interpersonal relationships and the world in general.

I will begin by talking about my mother, to whom I owe my life in so many aspects that I would lack words. Her name is Claudia and she was born far from the city, the daughter of a lady with serious personality problems. This became clear to me during her last years of life, when she talked with her about the disturbing intentions she had when she learned that my mother, with only eleven years of age, decided to leave the house so as not to continue to endure physical and verbal aggressions.

Despite these circumstances, my mother managed to get ahead and become a successful woman. He traveled through different countries with a book always in his hands, because his taste for literature was in a way his salvation. This is because as a child she used to read a lot, imagining that she was in those fantastic worlds that appeared in her stories and novels, something that helped her to forget about her problems in real life. I inherited this same passion for books, and similar reasons were the trigger.

My father, on the other hand, also grew up in a humble home. He was the oldest of nine brothers, and from an early age, he assumed responsibility for everyone. His house was in a very dangerous place, so he had to learn to defend himself and developed a cold and calculating personality. The man who raised him used to hit him and treat him in a derogatory way, a behavior that he later adopted.

When they both met, my father showed a completely different way of being, as if he were someone else. In this way, he managed to make my mother fall in love, that being pregnant she had no choice but to stay by his side. This situation lasted for sixteen long years until she decided to abandon it because she wanted to recover the self-esteem and confidence that she sacrificed for my well-being.

With the passing of the years, I became more understanding. Now I understand the difficulties my parents had to overcome, but none of that has changed the influence they had on my personal development. I have a lot of problems relating to other people, and I am extremely distrustful. I have been through several episodes of depression, and although in due course they affected me a lot, nowadays I see them as experiences that have helped me to see the world in a more objective way.
