Religions represent one of the oldest and most important cultural systems for people to learn to live in a community. From a series of fantastic narratives and symbologies, they seek to explain the origin of the universe and the reason for human existence. They also establish models of how to behave based on certain laws and values. These characteristics have allowed different scientific disciplines to have focused on the study of religion, so it is necessary to know their conclusions in order to have an objective knowledge on the subject.

In the historical aspect, it is sought to analyze the origins of religions, which were used to try to understand the natural phenomena that were incomprehensible to hunter and gatherer societies. In this way, the idea of gods and supernatural beings was born from the visions that were achieved through sensory deprivation or the consumption of hallucinogenic plants. While in Greece and Rome there were oracles, which carried out similar practices by using special incenses or substances such as opium.

However, as time went by, a more sophisticated position was adopted, exalting the purity of the body and the spirit. The alteration of the mind by external agents was replaced by rituals, such as prayers, songs, and offerings. These contemplative resources are those that have prevailed to this day, and facilitate access to a religious experience.

On the other hand, sociology has been responsible for studying the behavior of believers, seeking to explain the functioning of religions and their structure. Thus we find that most doctrines raise answers about creation and human nature, but never leave aside the concepts of good and evil. The latter is essential for the development of ethical codes that attempt to offer a position on how to live.

Taking into account the above, it is not surprising that many societies have adopted religion as a symbol of their identity. In this way, it becomes a fundamental piece that influences the legislative order, acting in a beneficial or harmful way depending on its evolutionary process and the private interests that exist.

Finally, in cultural anthropology there is also a branch that has analyzed the development of religious beliefs, explaining that they have a close link with magical thinking and irrationality. Apart from these assessments, he concludes that religion can become an important instrument for social change, whose capacity for progress or regression depends only on people and their will.
