In recent years, quite significant social changes have been experienced, a result of the process of globalization in the cultural sphere, which in turn is a consequence of the constant use of the Internet through new technologies and mobile devices. This brings with it the need to analyze, on a scientific level, the variables involved, which is possible thanks to sociology and its multiple research techniques.
As the name implies, it is a social science that is in charge of studying the collective phenomena that occur when human beings live in a certain community. To accomplish this, a series of research methods and disciplines are used that are used to interpret each variable. From theoretical perspectives that seek to delimit the causes of a change or problem, to the influences that cause the emergence of new trends. All this is essential to understand people’s behavior, especially when there is a social coexistence that aims at harmonic coexistence.
However, since sociology is focused on the analysis of social relations, it is inevitable that its heterogeneity has motivated the development of very diverse currents, which often contradict each other. Apart from generating certain conflicts between fanatical groups and stubborn defenders of certain postulates, this characteristic has encouraged their enrichment as a science, through the confrontation of knowledge.
The research concepts and techniques initially mentioned are applied according to two sociological methods. One of them is the quantitative method, which takes as reference the numerical values ​​to facilitate the analysis of a statistical form. For this, randomized experimental tools are used, but also questionnaires and other types of surveys. The emphasis on the accuracy of the data is very important, allowing to create a relationship between the theory and the indicators that are being measured.
On the other hand, the qualitative method focuses on explaining the causes and reasons for human behavior, seeking to understand it deeply and answer questions directed at decision making. This is possible by observing small groups, either in real situations of daily life or through social experiments that are monitored. Here the experiences, attitudes, and beliefs that people have become more relevant, leaving generalization in the background and closer to phenomenology.
Using both methods together, sociology is able to analyze any structural and cultural changes in society. This is essential to understand how to address the possible problems involving collective phenomena caused by technological advancement, globalization and informative immediacy.
